Do I need a transit visa for stopover in Shanghai?

I hold an australian passport, planning to travel to US via shanghai (stop over only). do I need a visa?

If you will transit in Shanghai for less than 48 hours, you don't need a visa, it is possible for you to leave the airport to visit Shanghai city.
