Tourist Visa for 4 hour stopover in China

Hi, we are New Zealand citizens that live in Australia and will be visiting the USA in July this year, returning to Australia via China on 7 October 2012.
We will also transit in China on the way over but only for 4 hours.
We want to have a stopover in China on the return flight.
As we will not be in Australia three months before the date we want to visit China we can not apply for a tourist Visa before we leave.
Can we apply for a 6 month visa single entry or does it have to be double entry and if so does a transit stopover qualify as an entry?
Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks
Toni

Sorry, should have made myself clearer, we have a stopover of 4 hours on the way over but 15 hours on the way back, this is when we want to spend a couple of days in Guangzhou. As we will be outside Australia for 3 months we can not apply for a visa at home. Can we get a 6 month visa before we leave? Does that need to be a double entry visa? If needed we can leave the airport on the way over.

Oh dear, I think it is getting to hard.
If I apply for a visa in the US we will not have our passports on us if asked by a USA Immigration officer, that would not be good! We were asked for our passports last year and the was frightning enough, I hate to imagine what it would be like if we did have passports with us. I'm guessing we would have been locked up.
Looks like we will be spending 15 hours at Guangzhou airport on the way home. :-(

If you just have a 4 hours stopover in China and won't leave the airport, a transit visa is not required.

Yes, if you want to obtain a China visa in Australia, you should apply for a 6 months double entry visa, the transit stopover is not counted as an entry, however, there is no 6 months single entry visa. The 6 months visa is double entry.

If you are unlucky to obtain a 3 months single entry L visa, it expires when you plan to spend a couple of days in Guangzhou. However, nobody can sure you can get a 6 months double entry L visa.

When you go to USA from Australia, a transit visa is not required for the 4 hours stopover. You can try to apply for a China tourist visa in USA, then you can use the visa to enter Guangzhou for a few days.

My travel agent has suggested I apply for a 6 month double entry visa so that is what I am going to do. Fingers crossed!
