For the 9 hours layover in Beijing airport, if you won't leave the airport, a transit visa is not required. Then you just need a single entry visa for the return leg to Beijing and stay in China for a few weeks.

In fact, fo USA applicants, the visa fee is same no matter you apply for single entry visa, double entry visa or multiple entry visa. To avoid troubles, you'd better apply for a double entry visa. Please show your round-trip flight tickets to the visa officer.
