It is actually a multiple-entry tourist visa valid for 24 months. Here are some of the qualifications: born in China, have a Chinese wife or parents, have real estate in China...
As you hold an American passport, it is not difficult for you getting a multipl-entry visa. But the validity period may be shorter.
