About:Chinese Embassy in Pakistan

Is machine readable passport now compulsory to enter China?

I am a medical student in China and I am going back for my final MBBS exam end of this month. I still carry my old Pakistani passport which is valid till Jan. 2014. I am back in Pakistan doing my internship and will apply at you embassy for a visa again., and would like to confirm that I can still use the same passport..
Thank you and await your early response.
