For Chinese Visa, is green passport or machine readable passport required?

Hi, a friend of mine who applied Chinese Visa in the Philippines has been denied due to his old Philippine Passport (ordinary passport/non-electronic). Recently, our government upgraded it to machine readable passport (MRP). I am still using my old passport which is still valid till October 2012. Can I still use this PP in getting Chinese Visa or I need to renew first prior to application?

If you are a holder of the manual or Green Passport, you can still use your passport for travel abroad. All manual or Green Passports will remain valid until the stated date of expiry and are acceptable for use abroad.

I know that it is now in the process of migrating to the E-Passport System. The ePassport is a highly secure enhanced Machine Readable Passport that reduces identity theft by storing the biometrics and signature of the passport holder and by recording his thumbmarks.

If you are afraid that your application is denied by Chinese embassy in the Philippines, you can renew your passport into Machine Readable Passport prior to application.
