I have a 12 hour layover at Beijing airport, do I need a transit visa?

I am flying from the USA to Japan with a working visa in Japan. I will have a 12 hour layover at PEK and have booked an airport hotel for the night. Do I need to get a visa? Can my checked bags be checked through to Japan from the US or do I have to take them in China?

Yes, you need to get a transit visa to Beijing airport. You should enquire your airline whether the bags can be checked from US to Japan ditrectly. If you take two different airlines (US- Beijing, Beijing-Japan), the bags should be checked out first in Beijing, then check in for the next flight from Beijing to Japan.
