I am flying to Hong Kong on a South African passport for 2 weeks to visit family members. In that time we intend to visit Shenzhen to do some shopping for the day. Do I need a visa for China?

Yes, you need a China visa to Shenzhen for 1 day shopping, it is possible for you to apply Shenzhen visa on arrival. But I can't sure you will get it. If you have been Mainland China, the old China visa sticker on your old or new passport will increase the chance of success. If the visa on arrival application is denied, you can go to Hong Kong and ask the CTS in Hong Kong to help you to get a China visa.
