Is a Chinese visa needed to transit via china with an over night stay?

I am an Australian Citizen. traveling to and from Canada. I intend to pass through Peking PEK airport going to Canada and passing through Guangzhou Baiyun CAN airport returning to Australia. I will be staying over night for 1 night to make the right flight connections on each trip. Is a Chinese visa required to transit like this?

Yes, a transit visa is required for transit like this. You'd better apply for a multiple entry transit visa for your trip.
