Is 1 day exploring Tiger Leaping Gorge on my own advisable?

Is it advisable for us (2 persons) to visit the site on our own using public transport or should we follow a group? We will be staying in Old Town Lijiang and how much time to reach there? Is there any suggested itinerary that we should follow? One of us can speak Mandarin.
