It's a nice getaway from a busy city. To reduce the "rush" feeling, have about 3-6 days. A month if you want a serene and tranquil environment.
As David said, there are several international resorts around Lijiang, such as the luxurious Pullman Lijiang or Banyan Tree, or the characteristic hostels like Xiang Bala in Shuhe or other things. It really does depend on how luxurious or basic your stay is wanted.
Of course, the best thing to do is look up your destination. Shuhe is arguably more beautiful, quieter and less touristy than Dayan (downtown Lijiang), but lack some transportation (work with the hotel you inquire). Lijiang is, of course, more downtown and flocked with the majority of tourists from all over China, if you want the bar and singing culture at night.
