Can you change an L visa to a Z visa, ideally without leaving Beijing?

I have signed my contract for a teaching position in Sept but am attending a training camp Aug 12th. My flight leaves Aug 8th and China have only just started the application process for our documents to be sent to the UK. As there is just not enough time is there any way of getting out to china on an L visa and converting it in mainland China?
