Should I Apply for Z Visa in person in NYC?

I am quite surprised that I must apply in person in NYC. I teach abroad but my perment residence is in PA. After I apply in person must I stay in NYC to recieve the visa? To be completely honest, this is an incredible inconvenience. Is there anyway for me to avoid travelling to NYC?
Thank you

Mr.Jason, who did tell you that you must apply Z visa in person in NYC? As I know, the mailed visa application is not accepted, you may submit the application to the Visa Office of China Consulate in New York, If you cannot come in person, you may entrust someone else or a travel/visa agent to drop off your application at the visa office.
