The invitation letter from your former collegue or the invitation letter from your Chinese friend is both ok.
You can choose one of them.

Besides the invitation letter from your former college, his passport, work visa, work permit and residence permit are also required.

Besides the invitation letter from your Chinese friend, the copy of his ID card is required.
