Overnight transit in Beijing - can I leave the airport?

I am from the UK and have an air china flight booked between Melbourne and London. I have an overnight transit in Beijing of 15 hours. Is there anyway I can leave the airport? Do I need a visa to do so? Any help muchg appreciated.
