About:Chinese Consulates in South Africa

South African and would like to visit my son for 2 weeks who is studying in China do I need a visa

Yes, you need to apply for a China visa L for visiting your son in China. In this case, you need an invitation letter from him and possibly an official one by related office. Or you can just apply for a tourist visa (also L) instead if invitation letters are not ready.
