Transist visit due to plane layover

I am an American citizen living in Japan. I was told by my airline that my flight leaving Tokyo to Sweden had to have a layover in Beijing for 1 night and that a hotel will be provided. I was also told that I would need a transit visit for the 1 night stay. What is the cost for a transit visit versus a regular visa? Someone please help me out with this one.

Visa fees for US Citizens is the same (USD 140) for any kind of China visas. But if you will stay for less than 24 hours without leaving the airport, then, no visa is required. As you were told, your hotel may be out of air area in the city.
