Is a part-time job legal with Z Visa?

Is it legal or illegal to tutor English on the side or work for English language schools on a very very part-time basis (on my days off from my regular job) while on a z visa?

Well, it is generally OK. Anyway, you should read your job contract clearly to find out whether you can do it or not. Some companies may clearly write that part-time job is not allowed.

Saw you posted this a long time ago, but anyways, it is very popular for everyone to have part-time jobs, but yes, it is illegal. Normally no one cares unless you are reported. And the police sometimes crack down on some places. Some news articles posted of foreigners who had to pay a fine to police in Beijing. There are several reasons it is illegal: taxes, what if a foreigner comes and has all part-time jobs (even if he is illegal or criminal, etc.), and to protect the foreigner from working at a place that is not certified to hire foreigners. But like I said, everyone does it, just keep it on the down low.
