About:Chinese Embassy in U.S.A.

Hello, I am a USA citizen traveling to Thailand and have a 30 hour layover in Shanghai and was wondering if I need a visa to exit the airport for a couple of hours.

You don't need a visa to exit the airport for a couple of hours. USA nationals enjoy 48 hours visa exemption for transit in Shanghai (exit the airport is allowed)
