About:Chinese Embassy in U.K.

How likely is it I will get a 90 day visa for China?
I am flynig to Shanghai at the end of March, hopefully staying for the maximum length of my VISA, then planning to travel overland via Vietnaam and cambodia, and I have a flight booked home from Bangkok in August.
Will I need (and is it possible this far in advance?) to book a train from China to Vietnaam, as proof of my leaving China in order to get the China Visa?

Consular Officers decide on the visa's period of validity, duration of stay and number of entry in the light of China's laws and regulations. You can request for a 90 days visa to the application form. Return ticket is not required but you can provide it if you have.
