About:Chinese Embassy in U.S.A.

My husband has just been offered a 2 yr contract position in Nanjing. We previously lived in Shanghai for 7 years while he worked there. We have been back in the US for 3 years, can we apply directly for the Z visa or must we do the business visa and then convert it? Do I, as his wife, need a letter of invitation also, or is proof of kinship(marriage certificate) enough to get the Z visa..and is it available for a 2 year assignment?

Yes, you can directly apply for Z visa, your husband can apply for Z visa, you can apply for Z visa as dependent, for your application, the invitation letter is not required, proof of kinship, e.g. marriage certificate is enough to get Z visa. It is available for a 2 years assignment.

Please bear in mind The original and a photocopy of the Work Permit for Aliens issued by Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security or the original Foreign Expert's License issued by the Chinese Foreign Expert Bureau and an official invitation letter from an authorized Chinese Unit are the most important documents for Z visa application. The documents should be provided by his employer.
