About:Getting to Kunming

Hi, If I have a layover of 7 hours and 30 mins at Beijing Capital Airport, with an onward ticket for the destination (Singapore), can a person leave the airport for a few hours, and then come back to catch the next flight without having to get a China Visa? Could you take a train into downtown for a few hours and then come back??

Any quick info appreciated.

Not allowed to get out of the airport if you do not have a transit visa. Airport express train would not take to much time to Dongzhimen. Generally, you can get to the center of the city in one hour.

My friend and I did this on a 2008 trip. We took a shuttle into central Beijing, had lunch and walked the area around Tiananmen, and took the shuttle back to catch a flight to Inner Mongolia. I don't recall if there was a fee or if it was related to our airline, Air China, but I don't think anyone along the way questioned our status as visitors/travelers.
