About:China Visa Exemption

Hi, I have booked a flight from Vancouver to Hong Kong and will be transiting at Shanghai PuDong airport. I will stay in Shanghai for one night (less than 48 hours) before I fly out again to Hong Kong and was wondering if I would need a Visa if I carry a Canadian passport. I read on the web that Canadians can stay in shanghai (leave the airport) for 48 hours if they are transiting. Is this true that I do not need a Visa for China?

Thanks.
