About:Chinese Embasy in Ireland

-I would like to know if hotel reservation confirmation is only required for the first night in mainland china or do I have to pre-book all my nights in advance?

-At what point must the required travel itinerary be precise?

it is unnecessary to book all nights in advance, few nights is OK. About the travel itinerary, you can get from a travel agency from China, like this travelchinaguide, if you book their tour, they may provide you with it and both the hotel reservations.

The only problem is that I am meeting with a friend in Hong Kong, we wanted to do a road trip in main land china on our own... Do you think I could improvise once i'm there if I give them my first night and last night?

It is Ok, I think, since they have not listed detail hotel-booking requirement. But if they ask for it, you'd better explain to them as your plan.
