About:China Transit Visa

I'm a US Citizen traveling from Manila, Philippines to Chicago, USA in February 2011 and need to stop over in Beijing.

I arrive at Beijing airport at 11:20AM and depart Beijing airport for Chicago at 6:55AM the next day (approximately 20 hours later). I have two questions:

1) Do I need a transit visa?

2) Must I remain at the on-premise hotel inside of the airport or can I take a shuttle to another hotel that is a five minute drive from airport?

Thank you for your help!

Ms. miles,

Thank you for your response. I am sorry, but I am still confused. What you're saying (that I need a transit visa for 20 hour stopover) seems to contradict what the China Embassy says here:

★Visa-free transit
1. Visas are not required of aliens who hold air tickets to the final destination and have booked seats on international airliners flying directly through China, and will stay in a transit city for less than 24 hours without leaving the airport.

Do I need a transit visa because of different airlines (I take Air China from Manila to Beijing and American Airlines from Beijing to Chicago)? Is it because I am a US Citizen? Something else?

Thank you for your help!

You need a transit visa, Mr.Peterson no matter how long you will stay in the airport. With the visa, you can leave the airport.
