yes, you need to apply for a tourist visa. You can apply for China visa from China embassy/consulates according to the consular districts. There are CVASC in sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, if you are ordinary passport holders, you should apply for visa through the CVASC

The Chinese Embassy processes applications from Australian Capital Territory, Northern Territory and South Australia.

Applications from New South Wales are advised to be forwarded to the Chinese Consulate-General in Sydney;

Applications from Victoria and Tasmania are advised to be forwarded to the Chinese Consulate-General in Melbourne;

Applications from Queensland are advised to be forwarded to the Chinese Consulate-General in Brisbane

Applications from Western Australia are advised to be forwarded to the Chinese Consulate-General in Perth
