About:Chinese Embassy in Canada

I've been issued only a single-entry X-visa valid for 1-year for studying at BLCU starting Sept 2010. I asked for multiple entry but the embassy lady told me that they can't issue that. If I want to go travel somewhere for the X'mas holidays, I can simply go to a "local police station" to have it amended there (and I'm sure that I didn't confuse this with the temporary residence permit which is completely different). Can you confirm if this is correct?

please don't worry, if you get the residence permit, you don't need to amend your X visa. Foreign nationals who visit China for the purposes of study shall apply for Aliens' Residence Cards at local public security authorities within 30 days of entry into China.

Within the period of the validity of the Residence Card, the holder is entitled to enter and exit China for many times without applying for another visa.
