Hi,I am travelling from Beijing to Xian, spending the full day in Xian and then getting the night train from Xian to Shanghai that same day. Is it possible to purchase the Xian to Shanghai ticket in Beijing?If not, can you buy the train ticket the same day of travel?

Generally speaking,it is hard to Xian to Shanghai ticket in Beijing and it is difficult to buy Xian to Shanghai ticket the some day of your travel.You'd better book the ticket online in advance or ask for your friend in Xian to buy it for you.  You can also fly to Shanghai from Xian.
