你好!

I am a current Australian university student, and I have (somehow) made it to the second round of the "Hanyu Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition which will be held in Changsha, China.

We will be arriving in China in July, and I was just wondering what to expect. I have never been to Hunan, and I've got a few questions:

1) If I bring a laptop, is wireless internet easily available?
2) I have heard several rumors that "Facebook" is banned. Is this true?
3) I do know it'll be summer when I get there but does it get cold at night?
4) If anyone has heard of this competition, could you please tell me more about it? I can't read the official website as it is completely in Mandarin!

5) Finally, the most important question: I would LOVE to learn some Xiang Chinese/ Chang Sha hua, but the internet doesn't seem to have much...is there anyone out there who can give me a hand?

Thank you for any help you can provide! =)

Cheers,

Rach

Hi Rachael,
Let me try to answer your questions
1.WIFI service depend on the hotel you'll stay, some hotels have this service but some don't.
2.Yes, Facebook is Banned in China, you can only connect to it when you are back in Australia, sorry--
3.It is summer, if it is sunny in the daytime, it won't be cold at night, but if it is rainy, it'll be cold.
4.I've heard about this competition, it is a competition held for those who are longing to learn Chinese. Many cadidates have shown their accomplishments, for this competition, better prepare some traditional Chinese Art.
5.If you want to learn some Chang Shao Dialect, you can have a good try in the time you are there. But I must tell you, Chinese people from other places can't get to know this language, since it has a very big difference from Mandarin.
Anyway, wish you a good luck!

1) WIFI is common in hotels. You'll probably need to buy an AC adaptor when you get here, but hotels can lend you one as well.
2) Facebook is unaccessible, as is YouTube. There are programs that you can use to bypass the block, but I don't bother.
3) It doesn't get cold at night in the summer unless you're somewhere with a high elevation (like Xinjiang), but you should bring a set of longsleeve clothes just in case of rain, air conditioning, etc.
4) There's lots to tell, if you need some pointers I can help you out.
5) I recommend studying standard Mandarin for at least four years before studying a dialect, to ensure your foundations won't be influenced. Many of the larger dialects have dictionaries and even textbooks, not too sure about Xiang, the best place to try is a large bookstore in Changsha. But most people who speak it can't teach it, so you're kind of on your own with dialects. Native speakers of a given dialect with a background in linguistics (preferably teacher of linguistics) are usually the most helpful.
