I have seen photographs of a city built on the side of a cliff like mountain.  Many buildings, temples, a road to it, amazing trails, etc.   What is this place called? All I know is that it is in Shanxi

Hello.  I think you may be referring to the Hanging Monastery on Mount Hengshan in the Northern Shanxi province, south of Datong  There are 40 wooden halls and structures linked by an ingenious system of pillars and posts and walkways.  check out Mount Hengshan on Google.I hope this is of some help to you.
