About:FAQ of Chinese Visa Application

My family and I are travelling to Canada from Brunei this summer to visit family. My wife is Vietnamese (has only a Vietnam passport). We will fly to Hong Kong via Air Asia then leave for Canada on Cathay Pacific about 8 hours later. Since Air Asia is a point-to-point carrier we must pass through immigration in Hong Kong before we can pick up our luggage. Once we have our bags we will check in with Cathay Pacific at the departures level. My question is "does my wife need a visa and if so, what type?" Thanks in advance for your help.

No Hong Kong visa is required for your wife if she is in direct transit by air and when the person does not leave the airport transit area.

Ms.CHRISR, yes, your wife is allowed to get to the baggage reclaim area then check in for the next flight at departures, the immigration officers of Hong Kong airport can know that your wife just transit Hong Kong when they see the flight tickets.

Thank you for the information. While we are continuing our travel to Canada about 8 hours after our arrival in Hong Kong we must go through immigration/passport control to get to the baggage reclaim area. Once we collect our luggage we will then proceed to check in for our next flight at departures (not the transit desk). Will my wife be allowed through? What about getting a transit visa? Thanks.
