If you come to the city by air, you can exchenge some RMB in the airport. There you can find bank service. I've seen some South African friends use their mobilephone here. I think yours is OK, too. If you can't use it, you just need to go to a China Mobile Store or China Unicome Store and change a SIM card, if yours is with one.
