About:Chengdu Travel

Dear everyone

I am planning to move to Chengdu for work in late August 2010. I am a little nervous making a grand move to the other side of the world but am looking forward to the challenge but do admit to feeling very nervous as I can't speak Mandarin.

Could anyone offer advice or suggestions on the following as I have looked at many websites but I would rather get a response from people who either live or have been to Chengdu.
Firstly what is the weather like all year round so I know what to pack e.g jumpers, coat etc, are there many foreigners who speak English, food, cost of living also what about travel from Chengdu to other parts of China or even Asia. Is is better to bring a lot of clothing to Chengdu or buy there as I have heard that clothing is pricier in China but this could be a myth.

I would really aprpeciate any advice as I am going away on my own for the first time and I sure you can appreciate the risk and no matter what the replies are I am still going to come to Chengdu lol.

Thanks everyone I appreciate it.

Miss Del

Hello,Ms.Delmonti
I have been to Chengdu once. It is regarded as one of the most leisure cities in China and i sure felt so.
I went in summer, and it feels hot and humid with clouds and mist and little sunlight. Late August will be the last part of Summer. I found this page that will be helpful for you to get to know the average weather of Chengdu:

I don't think the clothes in China are all pricy. It depends on the market you go. If you go to large shopping malls and department stores, it will be surely pricy. But if you go to commercial streets clustered with small stands and bargain as freely as you can, you will get cheap things of course. Just be tough.
Most of the dishes in Chengdu will be spicy. Hotpot is one of the famous.
Anyway, it will be a great place to stay. Wish you a happy life there!

Miss Del,

I've been to both GB and Chengdu. Weather and foods not much differ & not the probs. In Chengdu, no one can speak English. You will face difficulties to meet even the officers - Immigration/ Custom/ Police/ Hotel/ Shopping/ Taxi/... NO CHINESE SPEAK ENGLISH.

It is easy, if you're already offered a job there, but if otherwised you have to learn Mandarin before you go. If you're on the go.. learn some important phrases and vocabulary with written chinese characters (buy English-Mandarin phrase book). Still you have to use body language. I just came back to my home country from Chengdu with muscled arm and with small mouth. LOL ha ha ha

Hope you'll find some English speakers within your working environment some day.

Hi Miss Del. I have been to Chengdu about 8 times and it is a great place so RELAX. As you dont speak Mandarin, don't worry as everywhere you go people want to bend over backwards to try out their english on you easpecially the younger ones and if you reply with a few chinese words like thank you etc and excuse me, they will be more than helpfull. It's great weather but you are going end of summer but it won't be as cold as uk. I would buy clothes over there in markets, and dont be afraid to haggle , it is expected, you can even buy stuff for 10 per cent of the starting price even in shops not just markets. Have a great time. Steve.
