I will be visiting China for the first time and would like some advice about the optimal way to travel around.

I will be spending my first 4 days in Beijing itself, then travelling to Chengde for 1 1/2 days. From Chengde to Datong overnight to spend a day visiting the Hanging Temples and Yungang Caves. From there overnight to Wutai Shan and Pingyao for a day, and finally travelling to Xi'an to see the Terracotta Army.

Is this actually feasible without rushing around too much? I want to be able to really soak up the atmosphere, history and culture, so a little worried I am trying to cram too much in. Also how easy it is to travel between the places, and ther best way to do that.

Any advise much appreciated!

Your schedule for Datong, Wutaishan and Pingyao is too tight. It needs at least 2 days for Wutaishan and Pingyao old town. Itinerary for Beijing and Chengde is all right.
