About:Chinese Embassy in U.S.A.

Hello, I will be applying for a China visa but I'm not sure which one would be appropriate, between Tourist and the Business. Here is the situation:

I will be giving a short talk at a local institution. I have been invited to do this, but there is no official letter of invitation, nor any monetary transaction it. I am also *not* a business man, nor do i work professionally in the field of what I'm discussing. I will be covering my own hotel stay, flight, as well as everything else. Total trip duration will be 6 days.

My contact arranging the speech lives in france, so i don't believe I have easy access to a formal letter of invite from the location of the talk. I have been advised that a tourist visa would work, but that technically a lecture is listed under the Business visa.

Can you recommend which is the right one to apply for?

Mr.MIke, you can apply for a tourist visa to China rather than the business visa

The Visa Notifications Form from an authorized Chinese Unit, or invitation letters from the host company, meeting or exhibition organizers in China, or an introduction letter from applicant's US company is required for business visa, however, you don't have it.

Once you obtain a tourist visa and enter China, you still can give a lecture and visit China. Please don't worry, apply for a tourist visa.
