Hi, I will be flying from Sydney to Shanghai arriving 7pm, then need to join a tour group at 9pm same day at Pudong Airport to fly to Europe (flight to Milan is scheduled for 1am next day).  WIll there be enough time for me to checkout of customs and join my tour group at 9pm?  On my way back from Europe I also want to stay in shanghai for a week before flying back to Sydney.  Is single entry visa to china sufficient for my entire trip?

First of all, single visa is enough for your entire trip, because you do no need a visa when you make a transfer at Shanghai from Sydney to Europe. You do not need to have checkout of the customs, for you just make a transfer and will not go out of the airport. You can claim you lugguage, handle the transfer at transfer area then recheck-in. I think time is enough. ANyway, do it as fast as you can.
