About:Chinese Embassy in U.S.A.

I am an American citizen applying for a study abroad program for which I will need an X visa. I will not find out if I was accepted in to the program (which begins in September) until June. In June, I will already be in Asia travelling. Is it possible for me to get this X visa in the Chinese embassy in Bangkok or in any other non-US city?
Will I need the original copy of the acceptance letter from the university, or is a copy (printed from email) ok?

Ms.Chelsea, it is not simple answer to this problem, sometimes, Chinese embassy or consulate refuses to issue China visa to applicants who are not resident in that country, sometimes, Chinese embassy or consulate issue visa to USA citizens who are just visitors in that country. You can have a try to apply for China X visa in Thailand. If you are refused, you can go to Hong Kong to apply for China X visa.

Thank you so much for your answer, Nancy! Would my likelihood of getting a Chinese visa in Hong Kong be much higher.

There is one more possible option which I thought of: could I get a tourist visa in the USA and then turn it in to an X visa once I am inside China.

One more thing: I know that an acceptance letter form my welcoming University is required, can this be a copy or scan or must it be original.

Ms.Chelsea, the original acceptance letter is required, it is advisable to get X visa in USA, if you can't apply for X visa in USA, you have to try at every Chinese embassy or consulate you will pass, such as you can have a try to apply for X visa at Chinese embassy in Bangkok, or Commissioner's office of Foreign Affaires Ministry of PRC in Hong Kong.
