It is important to note about visa issues here though! For emmigrating to the USA, it is better to not get legally married in China. If so, then the couple must petition a "marriage" visa from the USA government. The approval process for this visa takes significantly longer than it does for approval of a "fiance" visa. A wise strategy is to avoid the legal marriage at the civil affairs office and only opt for the religious or ceremonial wedding along with the wedding party. Even though most Chinese parents will consider that this couple have entered into a true and valid marital commitment, this will not be seen as a true marriage in the eyes of the governments. This is a very important distinction!
