About:Shanghai Pudong Airport

We are on a cruise and will get off the ship at approximately 8:30 am. We are booked on UA 12:30 Shanghai (PVG) flight to San Francisco which leaves at 12:30 p.m. United is saying that we need to be at airport at least 3 hours beforehand. We would like to take a short tour of Shanghai but are worried that we may miss our flight? How long does it take the the cruise pier to the airport? How long does the entire check in process (check in/baggage/health check/security etc)actually take?

Well, it is right that you should arrive at the airport 3 hours before your flight departure. It will be enough for you to finish all of the check-in process. Plus another one hour from downtown Shanghai to the airport by taxi, I think you should leave for the airport around 20:00. Nice trip!
