hello i am a student about to go to an american university in china they say i dont need the jw202 just apply as a tourist then once i am there they can change it into a student visa so what do i need to bring for my appointment at the chinese ambassy

Generally speaking, the appointment is not required, you can submit visa application directly to Chinese Embassy in Senegal.
