First of all, you should take a flight from USA to arrive in Shanghai Pudong Airport.

Secondly, pleaes take the shuttle bus Line 5 to arrive at Shanghai Railway Station. There are many trains departing to Nanjing here, taking 2~5 hours. The real-time train schedule could be searched at https://www.travelchinaguide.com/china-trains/

Thirdly, you could purchase a train ticket to Nanjing on the spot at the railway station, no need to book it in advance. You should pay it by RMB cash.
