About:Shanghai Pudong Airport

I am travelling with my family from sydney australia and in transit for an evening on the way to Rome at Pudong airport. Is it necessary for us to have hotel stay? can we go into Beijing and put our bags in lockers or can we just stay at the airport? cheers kate

Ps: you could do a non-visa transit at Pudong within 48 hours.
