About:Chinese Embassy in U.K.

I am a UK citizen and will be coming to Beijing en route to London on 20th December.
I will be staying in Beijing for around 20 hours before flying on to London but I will leave the airport and stay in a hotel downtown.

My travel agency says they checked with the Chinese consulate and were told I don't need a visa in advance.
Can you please confirm that this is correct?

I hear that the Beijing capital international airport has extended the 24 hours visa free stopover time to 72 hours, so I guess that you don't need a transit visa.
