About:China Embassy in Thailand

Currently working in Maldives but will be moving to work in China very soon. As there is no consulate in the Maldives, do I need to go back to my home country (Sweden) to apply for the 'Z' visa?

Am planning to travel to Bangkok and am hoping to do all visa application from there? Is this possible?
