About:Hong Kong International Airport

Does anyone know what the deal is with Australian and US citizens not being able to purchase duty free alcohol, tobacco products etc at Hong Kong airport. My daughter has recently returned from there and she was advised by staff at various shops that she was not able to purchase duty free but had to do so when she returned to Australia. Passengers had to present all carry on bags etc for searching by customs prior to boarding. What is going on here??? I have called Australian customs and they say that this is not an Aust govt restriction. I'm heading off to HK next week and would like to know if anyone has an answer to this? Thanks in advance.

The Australian Government (not customs btw) doesn't trust the security screening done at Hong Kong Airport, so enforces gate checks of bags.

Hence, you cannot buy liquids > 100ml at the airport if travelling to Australia.
