About:Chinese Embassy in U.S.A.

I'm an American currently living in South Korea, but am planning to move to China next year. For now, my plan is to travel independently for a few months before studying Mandarin at a university in Chengdu. So far, I am a bit confused as to which visa I should apply for. An administrator at the university recommended that I apply for a travel visa and then later, once I enrolled, the university would help me to change my visa. However, when I looked at another university today, they said that visa changes are impossible. Because I will be traveling for three months prior to enrolling at the university, how should I handle this? Thanks for any advice.

A single entry tourist visa is usually 3 months valid but only with 30 days duration, but you can apply for extension of stay from the public security bureau when the 30 days duration is about to be over.
You can apply for a tourist visa and then chenge it to be a student visa under the help of your university in China.

change travel visa to student visa is totally possible, the university that you enrolled with will help you with that, it's part of what they offer to foreign students, My boyfriend has been through the exact same situation, the only thing is that you need to get health inspection for the student visa longer than half year. So my advice to you is to get travel visa first! Gook luck!
