About:Chinese Consulate in Vancouver

My Son is a Canadaian citizen holding a Canadain passport (expiring 2010 April 10th) and also a HK Identity Card. He is planning to travel to Hong Kong in December for 10 days. Questions are:
1. Given that he is a permanent resident of Hong Kong, does he still need to renew his passport since it has less than 6 months validity when he travels?
2. He is taking a round trip flight to Hong Kong via Beijing. Does he need to apply for a transit visa for the connection flight?

1. he doesn't need to renew his passport, having a minimum validity on his passport of 1 month beyond the intended stay is accepted by the immigration officer of Hong Kong. In another words, he has a HK Identity Card, he can use it to enter HK

2. If he stays at Beijing for less than 24 hours without leaving the airport, he doesn't need a transit visa for connection flight.
