About:Chinese Consulate in San Francisco

Does anybody know the purpose behind showing the Consulate an old expired Chinese passport for a US Citizen to get a new chinese visa?

As far as I know, applicants should provide a passport with blank pages and at least 6 months validity left before expiration.

They requested that my wife and I provide our expired passports as well. My speculation is that they want to look at where you have been traveling as stamped on your old passport.
