Hello, Mrs. Veerle.
Yes, you can buy the train tickets in advance. Usually they can be purchased 5-7 days ahead of time. Sometimes, it is possible to buy 10 days or even longer prior to your traveling date. You need to confirm it with the local ticketing office because timeline varies with cities. Bear in mind that in China, train tickets are easily bought at the originating station. In Shanghai, you can have a try to buy the tickets of Guilin/ Xian, but prepare for a disappointment.

You need to pay for extra booking charge if you ask your hotel or a travel agency to buy the tickts for you. If they can promise the availability, it is worth the money.
