Not knowing how the hard sleeper compartments are, we wonder if traveling in a hard sleeper during the day and for a fairly long distance is a good solution.

It seems to me that the hard sleeper train is not recommended as transportation means to travelers who wants to visit China. But sometimes, there might be no flight, soft sleeper trains available between smaller cities or on short trains. In that case, you may have to take it. In the hard sleeper carriage, there are usually several open compartments and each comprises six berths, fixed as an upper, middle and lower on either side.
